R.I.P. Carrie Fisher

Some very upsetting news to report today to you all. Carrie Fisher, the actress and writer who first captured a galaxy of hearts with her turn as Princess Lea in the Star Wars franchise, has passed away. She was 60 years old. Fisher had been fighting for her life ever since suffering a heart attack a few days ago, but just yesterday she had apparently been doing better. As a Star Wars fan, this breaks my heart, though film fans the world over will clearly be in mourning. For many, another very distinct and essential part of our childhood has been taken from us.

This was the statement released a short time ago:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning”

Instead of simply regurgitating details, I thought I’d share some quotes from Fisher that shows just who she was. Here’s a select few:

“I got to be the only girl in an all-boy fantasy, and it’s a great role for women. She’s a very proactive character and gets the job done. So if you’re going to get typecast as something, that might as well be it for me.”

“I  wrote. I wrote from when I was 12. That was therapeutic for me in those days. I wrote things to get them out of feeling them, and onto paper. So writing in a way saved me, kept me company. I did the traditional thing with falling in love with words, reading books and underlining lines I liked and words I didn’t know.”

“Because I grew up in a public family, I never really had a private life. And so if those issues are going to be public, I would rather them to be public the way I’ve experienced them rather than someone else assuming things about me. It’s freeing to do it. Shame is not something I aspire to.”

She will be missed…
